Abu Dhabi Airports has deployed WeClean Escalator Handrail sanitizing systems on eight escalators and travellators, in its first phase of implementation. The first eight locations are within high-risk areas of Abu Dhabi International Airport, frequented daily by travellers, visitors and employees. The new systems have been installed on escalators at various entrances to the airport including those at Skypark level 4, check-in, Terminal 1 and the ‘Meet & Greet’ area.
Hamad Al Ahbabi, Acting Director of Facilities Management at Abu Dhabi Airports, said: “In line with our continuous efforts to ensure the safety and wellbeing of travellers and visitors to Abu Dhabi, we have installed the new WeClean Escalator Handrail sanitising systems at key locations and entrances to Abu Dhabi International Airport. These sanitising systems help contain the spread of bacteria and viruses, including COVID-19, and form a part of our wider introduction of a whole range of state-of-the-art health and safety technology across the UAE capital’s airport.”
The WeClean Handrail sanitising system, developed in South Korea and installed by Jacky’s Business Solutions, underwent three months of testing on one escalator at Abu Dhabi International Airport prior to being incorporated on a wider scale. With a three-step disinfection process, the system successfully neutralised all bacteria and viruses on the escalator and demonstrated its reliability during the testing period.
Manoj Ganapathy of Jacky’s Business Solutions, said: “WeClean is designed to work 24x7 with a life cycle of approximately eight years. It made sense for Abu Dhabi Airports to deploy these devices in high-risk areas in the Abu Dhabi International Airport. Since the product uses three steps in the cleaning and disinfection process - disinfection liquid spray followed with three-tier lint-free micro fibre rollers and UV light - it ensures the safety of the escalator and travellator users.”
He added, “Since the escalator and travellator handrails are continuously cleaned and disinfected round the clock with no intervention of the cleaning staff, it provides a great sense of security for users to actually hold the handrails for safety. By deploying the WeClean Escalator Handrail sanitisers, Abu Dhabi Airports will inspire other airports across the region, mall operators and hypermarkets to deploy such solutions.”
